Bob Atwood, the popular Leader of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, lost his eat to the UKIP candidate at Thursday's local elections. Fellow Councillors were shocked. "Bob has fought a tough campaign and is generally acknowledged to have reversed the unpopular prgrammes of his predecessor as Leader, Roy Bullock, and restored confidence in the Council. So it is a massive shock." said one of his colleagues.
Elsewhere in the local elections the Conservatives won Speldhurst & Bidborugh Ward by a large majority, with Councillor Julian Stanyer polling 1,011 votes and winning 63% of the vote. Voting figures were:
Julian Stanyer (Conservative) 1,011 votes
Labour 212 votes
Lib Dem 164 votes
UKIP 221 votes.
Other notable results were the loss of contraversial Councillor Brian Ransley's seat at Capel and the win by local resident Chris Woodward of one of the Broadwater seats.
